What material do you use to make your frames?

All of our frames are exclusively made from 100% Mazzucchelli Italian acetate which is why you’ll never find injection-molded eyewear in any of our collections. Mazzucchelli has a rich history of producing material for the eyewear industry and its cellulose acetate is widely considered the pinnacle frame material for designer eyewear. You can see their amazing process and more details here.

What are your lenses made out of?

READING GLASSES
We use aspheric lenses cut from CR-39 (an ultra-durable optical plastic) for all of our reading glasses. These optical-quality lenses also feature both anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings. Additionally, they also include a blue light blocking coating which blocks up to 60% of harmful blue light emitted from the screens of electronic devices.

SUNGLASSES
Our sunglasses come with either polarized or polarized mirrored CR-39 lenses. Both have full UV400 protection which simply means they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. 100% UV protection is a necessity when wearing sunglasses, and any lens that falls short of this standard could cause you serious longterm eye damage.

What type of hinges do you use?

We use 3, 5, or 7-barrel, stainless steel hinges for our frames dependent on their design. Furthermore, all of our hinges are adhered to the stainless temple core and attached by real, through the frame, rivets. Simply put, our hinges are the anchor of our frame construction and will withstand just about anything you can throw at them.

Will I receive a case with my eyewear?

Yes! Each and every pair of readers, sunglasses, or frames comes with its own leather case. We hand make each and every case from Napa Valley leather in our northern Minnesota studio because we think great eyewear should be paired with a truly great case. Last but not least, you will also receive a custom printed microfiber cleaning cloth to keep your frame and lenses clean and clear.

Can I adjust your glasses for a better fit?

Yes, our built-in temple wire core allows for adjustments and a customized fit. Unlike injection molded frames, acetate frames with a wire core can be manipulated to achieve a better fit for each individual. We recommend you visit your local optician to have them adjust your frames accordingly. They have the equipment necessary to easily bend your frames and will do so for either a small fee or at no cost. We recommend they start with low heat and work their way up to adjust your frames.

Will over the counter (OTC) reading glasses hurt my eyes?

The short answer is no! As we age or over-use our eyes, our lenses begin to lose flexibility while focusing. This is a condition known as Presbyopia. In today’s world, with increased amounts of screen time and electronic use, these symptoms can occur prematurely.

Reading glasses simply help our eyes do what they they are supposed to do, just better , by magnify objects we are trying to read, thus decreasing eye strain.

How do I know which lens magnification or power I need?

You won’t find a lens magnification chart on our website and you may ask yourself, “why would they do that?!” It’s simple actually. We are not ophthalmologists and want to make it clear that OTC reading glasses are not a substitute for annual eye exams.

If you already know your lens power,  feel free to order the style and power of your choice. If you are unsure of the power or magnification you need, we recommend scheduling an eye exam with your local ophthalmologist. After all, you’ll want to ensure you have great eye health no matter what glasses you are wearing! Either way, we offer a 30 day, no questions asked, return policy on all of our eyewear. If your power isn’t quite right after you order, reach out to us for a quick swap to another magnification.

Are your sunglass lenses polarized?

Yes! All of our sun lenses, mirrored and non-mirrored are polarized.

POLARIZED LENSES
Polarized lenses feature horizontal filters which block harsh reflections coming off of flat surfaces such as water, cars, roads, and more. The lenses will filter out this harsh glare rendering a much more vibrant and clear field of vision. While on or near the water, you will notice that polarized lenses can cut through the glare on the surface of the water allowing you to see deep into the water depending on its clarity.

MIRRORED LENSES
Mirrored lenses feature, well, mirrors! Despite what you might think, the reflective characteristic isn’t just for looks. Mirrored polarized lenses offer some unique features that regular polarized lenses don’t.

Mirrored polarized lenses will also reflect a large amount of bright light away from the lens resulting in a darker visual than regular polarized lenses.

UV PROTECTION
Both our regular polarized and mirrored polarized lenses provide full UV400 protection or, in simpler terms, 100% UV protection. Can you tell we like to geek out on this?!

Can I purchase frames with non-prescription (plano) lenses?

Of course you can! In fact, this is one of the exact scenarios we had in mind when creating Folklore. Great eyewear shouldn’t cost you a months rent or a mortgage payment. Even typing that feels ridiculous, but it’s completely true in some instances.

While we can’t fill your prescription lens needs at this time, we can at least get you started in the right direction with premium eyewear at an amazing price. Once you receive your frames from us, you can have your prescription lenses added by your local optician or through one of the many vendors available online.

Can I get my own prescription lenses put in your frames?

We go a little deeper into this topic above but yes, any qualified optician or online lens service should be able to add your prescription lenses to any Folklore Eyewear frame. Our frames can compete with any frames on the market, making them great candidates for prescription lenses.

How should I clean my frames and lenses?

Your Folklore Eyewear glasses will look their best when cleaned regularly and stored in the provided case when not in use.

When cleaning, blow lenses clean before using mild soap and water to clean your frame and lenses. Using household cleaners could strip your lenses of its protective coatings or even damage your glasses physically and should be avoided without exception.

Once your glasses are clean, use the provided microfiber cloth to dry and finish cleaning your eyewear. Your t-shirt doesn’t typically make a good cleaning cloth and other items like paper towels are abrasive and could scratch your lenses.

Can I use my HSA or FSA dollars for your reading glasses?

Both FSA and HSA dollars are available to use for over the counter (OTC) reading glasses. Typically you will have a special debit card to use for such expenses. If not, you can usually submit your expenses to your insurance provider for full reimbursement from your account. Unsure whether you have an HSA or FSA? Check with your employer to see if you have the option to contribute to either one or both.

Please note that there are several key differences between the two accounts that you’ll want to learn about. Check out this great article from Nerdwallet here or ask your HR representative to explain the differences between the two. Key areas of interest are the “use it or lose” nature of the FSA and the triple tax benefit of the HSA.
